University of Melbourne’s Graduate Research Scholarship

The University of Melbourne’s Graduate Research Scholarship and Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship are offered to high-achieving international and domestic students who are enrolling in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne.

Over 8,000 academic and professional staff support a vibrant student body of around 65,000. This includes, 30,000 international students from over 130 countries around the world. Melbourne offers her students an experience that goes beyond structured learning. The main Parkville campus is close to transport, cafes, shopping, arts and sports venues and accommodation. 

Students will find a blistering array of cultural activities on campus here, be it theatre, comedy, film or public lectures, and it’s easy to find people with matching interests by joining one of over 200 affiliated clubs and societies, ranging from Chess Club to Women in Science and Engineering, to the Chocolate Lovers’ Society. Eligibility:

  • Domestic and international students

Benefits:

  • 100% fee remission and up to $135,000.
  • Full fee offset for up to two years for students undertaking a Masters by Research degree or up to four years for students undertaking a doctoral degree.
  • Living allowance of $37,000 per year pro rata (2024 full-time study rate) for up to two years for students undertaking a Masters by Research degree or up to 3.5 years for students undertaking a doctoral degree. The living allowance may be indexed annually and includes limited paid sick, maternity and parenting leave.
  • Relocation grant of $2000 for students moving from States or Territories other than Victoria or $3000 for students moving from outside Australia.
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership for international students who require a student visa to study in Australia

To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

  • have applied for and meet the requirements for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne, or
  • be currently enrolled in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne.

Selection criteria

Domestic students who are offered admission to a Masters by Research or doctoral degree (PhD) at the University of Melbourne will receive a Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset).

Domestic and international students receive Graduate Research Scholarships, including stipends and fee offsets, based on academic merit. Eligible applicants are ranked based on academic achievement in their last degree and research potential in their field. Factors considered include degree completion at the research course level, professional experience, publications, medical qualifications, or original music composition.

How to apply:

The system automatically considers new students who apply for a research course by its deadline for Graduate Research Scholarships. Expect the system to notify you within ten business days of submitting your course application that it has recorded your scholarship application.

If you deferred a research course for a scholarship, submit your online application by October 31 for consideration next year. Within ten business days of submitting the form, the system will notify you when it adds your scholarship application to your record.

Submit your online application form by October 31 while enrolled in a research course to qualify for next year’s scholarship. Expect a notification confirming the addition of your scholarship application to your record within ten business days after online submission.

When will I know the outcome?

Domestic students will receive an offer for Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset) as part of their course offer.

Graduate Research Scholarships offering stipends and fee offsets independently coincide with course acceptances.
