Eligibility Requirements for University of Hamburg Scholarship

You must meet the eligibility requirements established by the University’s scholarship committee. You are entitled to funding if you:

  • Students must have been enrolled in any subject at Universität Hamburg for at least 2 semesters. You are pursuing a degree (students in 2-year master’s degree programs and doctoral researchers can apply after 1 completed semester);
  • do not hold German citizenship
  • are not eligible for the federal student loan scheme.

Selection criteria

The selection criteria for the university of Hamburg merit scholarship is as follows:

  • good to excellent academic performance
  • other verifiable knowledge and capabilities (e.g., presentations, publications, prizes; additional specialised skills); previous funding
  • social and/or intercultural activities (e.g., confirmation of volunteer work)
  • applicant’s need/social situation

  • Non-EU citizens must submit a copy of their residence permit to the student coordinator.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Evidence of Social or Intercultural Activities (if applicable)
  • Letter of Motivation
  • Evidence of achievements record
    • Bachelor’s Degree Students and those in programs concluding with a state examination (“Staatsexamen” ): Provide either the STiNE printout of your “Leistungskonto” or a current transcript of records.
    • Master’s Degree Students and Doctoral Researchers: Submit your most recent degree certificate with grades in English or German.
  • Evaluations from two full-time Teaching Staff Members with Doctorates at University of Hamburg.

Scholarship benefits

  • The maximum monthly funding sum is €930. The committee may award individual doctoral researchers a merit scholarship totaling €1,200 per month, depending on the availability of funding.
  • The committee awards merit scholarships for 2 semesters, totaling 12 months.
  • You can reapply for a scholarship. In well-founded exceptional cases, the maximum funding period is 3 years.
