Dorcas Maclean Scholarship 2024

The Dorcas McClean Scholarship, worth up to $40,000, helps students get admission to an accredited university. Applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 25, and have resided in Australia for at least two years prior to the competition date. Assessment is a competition (for shortlisted applicants only), held over many days at the Southbank Campus. This is a triennial competition, with the next one scheduled for early 2025.

Scholarship Benefits:

  • A one-time payment of up to $40,000 to study at another institution recognized by the University of Melbourne.
  • The runners-up and third-place candidates will get $10,000 and $5000, respectively.

Scholarship Eligibility:

Applicant must:

  • Be a violinist aged no older than 25 and no younger than 17 (as of 2 February 2025), and resident in Australia for no less than two years at 2 February 2025.
  • eligible for admission to a course of study at an institution approved by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the head of the school of Music in the faculty; or
  • under the supervision of a teacher approved by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the head of the school of Music; or
  • be a graduate or undergraduate of the University.

Selection Process:

  • The winner of this scholarship will be chosen through three rounds of performance competition from among up to six applicants.
  • Candidates will be evaluated by panels of renowned Australian and international violinists based on musicality, tone, technique, intonation and composure.
  • There will be monetary awards for the second and third place finishers, as well as a large prize for the Dorcas McClean Scholarship recipient.
  • The shortlisted applicants will receive a specific amount of reimbursement to help cover the costs of the competition criteria.

How To Apply:

Applications for round 1 are online via the link below and must include:

  • an excellent online recording of the assigned material that includes your teacher’s or employer’s contact information for recording verification
  • a synopsis of the musician’s experience, including the times and locations of professional work and any relevant educational background
  • information about the suggested study or training program you plan to do, together with the contact information for two references.
  • Renowned Australian violinists will evaluate the recordings based on musicality, tone, technique, poise, intonation, and tone. Six finalists will move on to the second round. From round two to round three, three finalists will advance.
